A Hayward Classic
Boasting a rich history as a premier spot in Hayward, Angler’s Bar and Grill was established in the early 1930’s by the Johnson Brothers: Cully, Oscar and Buck. The original Angler’s featured a lower-level, basement bar and an upper-level gas station and garage. It is said that during prohibition, the basement played host to the activity of some of America’s most notorious gangsters. In 1936, the gas station was remodeled into a bar and bowling alley.
The Johnson Brothers were avid fishermen and hunters. They enjoyed collecting wildlife taxidermy – many of which are still on display in the present-day Angler’s. Additionally, the many old-time photos adorning the walls of Angler’s tell a story of this building’s colorful past.
In 1977, the historic building was purchased by the Fuller Brothers: Larry, Alan and Brian. Ironically, three brothers would again own Angler’s Bar. In 1978, renovation of the present-day beer garden began as well as the expanded seating inside. Since then, there has been continued expansion and remodeling to create the current Angler’s Bar and Grill.
After 40 years, the Fuller brothers passed the torch to locals Pat and Billie Jo Sabin, who purchased the business on November 14, 2017. It was also the couple's 30th wedding anniversary. They look forward to welcoming and serving the many generations of patrons.
